Winnipeg, MB – At the end of January, Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company celebrates its third anniversary in business. They continue to produce Wines, Ciders and Meads – including two Grape Wines made from Manitoba Grown Grapes.
It’s been a huge year for the duo of twenty-three year old owners of Shrugging Doctor, now joined by their two new employees Wyatt and Sloan, the company has made giant leaps in 2019.
Releasing 5 new products over the last 12 months and bringing back improved recipes for 3 other ones, winemaker Zach Isaacs continues to prove his skills and innovation. While Willows Christopher, head of sales and marketing, led a sampling and promotions campaign that culminated in over 15 farmers markets and events every single week being attended by the young winery.
Perhaps Shrugging Doctor’s biggest accomplishment this year was the opening of “The Doctor’s Lounge”, an intimate tasting room/wine bar in St. James where the company is serving all their products, along with cocktails, wine flights and more.
“Despite some difficulty with government changes this year that make things more difficult for us to operate, we are very thankful for the people of Manitoba in getting us this far.” Co-Founder Willows Christopher said. “This is only the beginning, and we have so much more to focus on in 2020.”
Shrugging Doctor has no intention to stop growing, and will continue to offer their products all across Manitoba. Not only available in over 60 Liquor Marts in over 30 towns, you can still order their products for home delivery via SkipTheDishes, ship Canada Wide on their website, or visit them at 448B Brooklyn St. in Winnipeg to sit down and enjoy a glass.

Funny, isn’t it, that the government is always the big hold-up. On one hand, they are all about ‘promoting new businesses in Canada’ but on the other hand, there is at least 2 years of red tape and forms/licenses/taxes/business plans and so on to do to even start a winery in most provinces. It never ends. And the government sure doesn’t HELP with the process. Trust me, you are on your own. We’re currently starting a winery in SK, and it’s been 18 months, and we’re still not fermenting. That’s terrible for new businesses. Each step of the process involves waits of 6-8 weeks, while some young upstart in a government office justifies his/her job by taking 6 weeks to read a simple application and tick all the boxes.

It’s been frustrating for sure! And it appears Manitoba is getting more regressive in favour of supporting large international wineries rather than locals – we’re just thankful for our loyal customers.
