Winnipeg, MB – As we watch Canadians and Manitobans compete in the postponed 2020 Olympic Games; Winnipeg’s Only Winery, Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company, was competing in a very different (but equally important) competition – The All Canadian Wine Championships!
Although hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year saw the entry of 219 wineries from across our nation, entering a total of 1365 different wines to the renowned wine competition. Wineries competed in nearly 50 categories during the championships, with Shrugging Doctor entering a couple of their meads and fruit wines.
Although predictably British Columbia and Ontario swept the awards, we are delighted to report that Manitba’s hometown hero brought home a Double Gold Award, which means ‘Best in Category’ for their Apple Cinnamon Mead.
The mead (ACM for short) is fermented from 100% Manitoba Honey, mixed with crushed apples and aged over real cinnamon for a sweet and complex flavour comparable to apple pie.
“I’m very pleased.” said Zach Isaacs, Winemaker and Co-Owner of Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company. “We always hear that our products are great from customers, but it’s cool to be recognized by an organization like ACWC.”
Isaacs, with co-founder Willows Christopher, started the winery project when they were 18 years old. The now 25 year old partners say that they intend to continue improving their products and hopefully receive more awards in the future.
You can taste their Award Winning Apple Cinnamon Mead by visiting their wine bar and retail store at 448B Brooklyn St., Winnipeg, MB. The product is also available in select Liquor Mart locations across Manitoba, and is ready for home delivery on SkipTheDishes, UberEats, Bottle Drive, and GoodLocal.
